Investing in Burney High School students
Born in 1915, Joe and Esther Lawson lived full lives that included time in the military during World War II. Joe served in the Navy and Esther served as one of the few women Air Force service pilots of her day. The couple married and moved to Burney, California in 1946. Joe worked as a saw filer and Esther as a secretary for the Scott Lumber Company until they retired years later.
Joe and Esther committed themselves to investing in the futures of the young people in East Shasta County. They began awarding scholarships to graduates of Burney High School students in 1991, helping numerous students achieve the dream of a higher education. Esther passed away in 1996, and upon Joe’s death in 2000, the executors of the Lawson’s estate arranged to have Shasta Regional Community Foundation administer the scholarship to ensure that the legacy of the Lawsons continues.
Since 2000, two $2,500 scholarships have been awarded to Burney High students annually. Though they are no longer with us, Joe and Esther continue to touch the lives of many.
